A walk through history

As the city of royal coronations, Reims played a key political role in the history of France for over 900 years, and a number of exceptional sites and monuments still remain today from this era.

  • The Basilica of Saint-Rémi: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the basilica was the site of the baptism of Clovis, the first king to convert to Catholicism in the 5th century. Today, in addition to the basilica, that offers a magnificent fusion of Gothic and Romanesque styles, you can visit the museum.
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral: since Charles the Simple in 893, most of the kings of France were crowned in the Gothic nave of Notre-Dame Cathedral, the last being Charles X in 1825. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cathedral embodies Gothic art in all its splendour. Look up and admire the 2,300 or so sculpted figures on its facade, while inside you'll be struck by the remarkable luminosity. Finally, be sure to take the time to climb the steps of the towers; the views across Reims from the top are absolutely breathtaking.
  • The Palace of Tau: this former residence of the Archbishop of Reims is now a museum showcasing the cathedral's treasures. The Palace is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Historical tourism: immerse yourself in the two Great Wars that France endured in the 20th century. A real lesson in history: just five minutes from the hotel, the Museum of the Surrender that took place on 7 May 1945; a guided tour of the Fort of La Pompelle, a major site of resistance that remained in the hands of the Allies during the 1914-1918 war; the strategic east-west ridge of the Chemin des Dames, and more.
  • Art Deco in Reims: Take a stroll through the centre of Reims and admire the Art Deco buildings constructed here in the 1920s to replace all that had been destroyed during the First World War. From the Opéra to the Carnegie Library, named after the American steel magnate, via the Halles du Boulingrin, Place Drouet d'Erlon and Rue de Talleyrand, there is a stunning architectural gem at every bend in the road.

A stroll through the heart of Champagne

A special favourite: visit the cellars of Mumm, one of the world's most prestigious champagne houses. Just five minutes from the hotel.

  • Pink Biscuit of Reims: some say it's the only biscuit that goes with a glass of champagne. With its inimitable pink colour, the Pink Biscuit of Reims has been delighting young and old alike since the 17th century, and is now a regular feature on every festive menu.
  • Parcours Lalique in Aÿ-Champagne: in the heart of the Champagne vineyards, discover the art of crystal and the life of the internationally renowned master glass-maker, René Lalique.
